Outdoor & Industrial Electrical Enclosures

An outdoor electrical enclosure protects wiring, controls and panels from water, dust, corrosion and freeze and thaw cycles on commercial and industrial sites. E3 Électricité, a holder of an RBQ licence, supplies and installs them. Explore our industrial electrical services →

This collection is made up of industrial-grade enclosures and cabinets for outdoor and harsh settings. It does not include residential outlet or receptacle boxes. Typical uses include protecting an outdoor panel or disconnect, housing industrial controls and drives, and sheltering junction and terminal connections on commercial and factory sites. Each weatherproof electrical enclosure is chosen to keep equipment dry, accessible and protected from the elements.

Ratings tell you what an enclosure is built to withstand, so start there:

Rating

Protects against

Typical setting

NEMA 3R

Rain, sleet and ice

General outdoor use

NEMA 4X

Windblown dust, hose-directed water and corrosion

Road salt, coastal air or chemical exposure

Some enclosures also carry an IP rating, which describes dust and water protection on an international scale.

Material matters as much as the rating in Quebec, where road salt, moisture and UV exposure wear on outdoor equipment:

  • Stainless steel: the highest corrosion resistance, for washdown and corrosive sites.

  • Fiberglass: resists corrosion and UV, and does not conduct electricity.

  • Painted steel: a sturdy choice for sheltered or less exposed locations.

The collection carries Hoffman equipment, including A-series NEMA 4X stainless steel wall-mount cabinets, Protek vented cabinets rated Type 3R, and WeatherFlo Type 3R enclosures with fans for drives. Each Hoffman enclosure listing gives the model's dimensions, so you can compare sizes before choosing. Typical pairings include a NEMA 4X stainless cabinet near salted roads or washdown areas, a vented Protek cabinet for controls that generate heat, and a WeatherFlo enclosure where a drive needs cooling airflow.

E3 Électricité, a holder of an RBQ licence and a member of the CMEQ, supplies and installs enclosures across the Quebec City and Lévis region. Under maître électricien Jonathan Chabot, the team mounts, seals and wires each unit through our commercial electrical services, houses outdoor panels as part of our electrical panel services, and keeps installations in good order with electrical maintenance services.

FAQs

What is a weatherproof electrical enclosure?

A weatherproof electrical enclosure is a sealed housing that protects electrical connections, controls or panels from rain, snow, dust and moisture when they are installed outdoors. Its level of protection is defined by a rating, such as NEMA 3R or NEMA 4X, or by an IP rating on some products. Choosing the rating that matches the site's exposure determines whether the equipment inside stays dry and working through every season, including Quebec's long winters.

What is the difference between a NEMA 4X and a NEMA 3R enclosure?

A NEMA 3R enclosure handles rain, sleet and ice, which makes it a solid choice for general outdoor use. A NEMA 4X enclosure adds protection against windblown dust and hose-directed water and, importantly, resists corrosion. That corrosion resistance makes a NEMA 4X enclosure the stronger fit for sites exposed to road salt, coastal air or chemicals. Choose by looking at the harshest condition the enclosure will face, not the conditions of an average day.

How do you waterproof an outdoor electrical enclosure?

Start with the right rating for the environment, then protect it during installation. Gasketed or sealed covers must close fully, cable glands should match the cable size, and conduit should ideally enter from the bottom so water cannot run into the box. Drip loops and correct mounting orientation help too. A poor installation can cancel an enclosure's rating, which is why an RBQ-licensed installation protects both the equipment and code compliance.

Should I choose a fiberglass, stainless steel or painted steel enclosure?

It depends on exposure. Fiberglass resists corrosion and UV and does not conduct electricity, which suits outdoor sites with moisture or chemicals. Stainless steel handles the harshest corrosive and washdown conditions. Painted steel works well in sheltered or indoor locations, or where budget matters more than maximum durability. In Quebec, road salt and humidity make corrosion resistance a priority for any enclosure installed near roads, parking areas or industrial processes.

Can these enclosures house an outdoor electrical panel?

Yes. Larger-format enclosures can house panels, disconnects and controls outdoors, provided the rating and interior size suit the equipment and allow proper clearances and ventilation. Any outdoor electrical panel enclosure must be installed according to the Code de construction du Québec, and panel work must be carried out by qualified personnel. E3 Électricité, a holder of an RBQ licence, can assess the equipment and size the enclosure so the panel stays protected and accessible.
